Decide Whether the Scratch Is Only Cosmetic

View it in strong side light and inspect from several angles. A shallow mark may affect only gloss or color. A deeper groove can pass through gelcoat and expose a different-colored laminate. Press only as appropriate around the area and look for flexing, softness, branching cracks, distortion, or a hollow change that deserves professional assessment.

Location matters. A simple scrape on an unloaded topside is different from a crack at a fitting, hull-to-keel joint, rudder, chainplate, or high-load corner. So is a line that reappears after a previous repair. If impact history is unknown, inspect inside the hull where accessible. When you cannot determine the damage boundary, ask a competent fiberglass repairer or surveyor before grinding away evidence.

Prepare a Clean, Controlled Repair Area

Obtain the instructions and safety data for the exact repair system. Gelcoat paste, polyester products, vinylester products, and epoxy-based fairing systems are not interchangeable in every coating sequence. The instructions govern surface preparation, mixing, film thickness, cure, overcoating, and personal protective equipment. Confirm how the final surface will be sealed from air if the product requires it and whether an existing wax, polish, paint, or contamination must be removed.

Mask a generous work boundary without crowding the scratch. Remove only loose, cracked, or contaminated material using the method the repair instructions allow. Shape the defect enough for the repair material to bond, but do not turn a narrow cosmetic mark into a large structural excavation. Vacuum dust and use the specified final cleaning method. Keep solvent away from incompatible plastics and uncured seams. Dryness matters; a repair over trapped moisture can hide the symptom without solving the cause.

Fill, Cure, Fair, and Restore the Gloss

Do a color test before filling a conspicuous area. Old gelcoat changes with sunlight and polishing, so a nominal factory color may not disappear into the surrounding surface. Mix small batches accurately using the product's measuring method. Apply enough material to fill the prepared defect while limiting the area that will need fairing. Avoid guessing at catalyst, hardener, temperature range, or working time. These are chemical-system instructions, not universal boatyard folklore.

Leave the repair undisturbed for the full stated cure under the actual conditions. When it is ready, remove excess and fair it with the specified sequence, using a firm backing where appropriate so you level the repair rather than hollowing the surrounding gelcoat. Progress only as the instructions direct. Clean between stages and inspect with side light. Finish with a compatible compound or polish, then restore any protective wax or coating. The aim is a sealed, fair repair with minimal loss of sound original gelcoat.

Know When to Stop and Escalate the Job

Inspect before buying repair material

Wash the area and view it dry in good light. Run a clean fingernail across the mark without digging into it. A stain, transfer, or very shallow surface mark may polish out. A groove through the gelcoat needs filling. Cracking, movement, exposed laminate, moisture, a soft area, or damage around a fitting suggests a structural or water-entry problem that cosmetic paste will not solve.

Mark the full boundary with removable tape and photograph it with a scale. Check nearby edges and the back of the panel where accessible. If the damage came from an impact, inspect beyond the visible scratch. Stop if the substrate or cause is unclear.

Match the repair system to the hull and location. Use the gelcoat maker's instructions for catalyst, temperature, film thickness, cure, surface sealing, and finishing. Colour can change with age and sunlight, so test a small cured sample before filling a prominent area. Do not change catalyst ratio to speed a job outside the stated conditions.

Keep sanding local and progressive

Prepare only enough sound material to create a clean, secure repair. Remove contamination and loose edges without widening the scratch unnecessarily. Protect surrounding gelcoat because aggressive paper can turn a narrow groove into a large low spot.

After cure, fair the fill gradually. Begin with the abrasive grade allowed by the repair instructions, use a small firm backing where appropriate, and stop as soon as the fill is level. Move through finer grades before compound and polish. Clean between grades so one coarse particle does not keep cutting deep scratches.

Inspect from several angles and use reflected light to find a ridge or hollow. A glossy repair that is still proud will show as a distorted reflection. A low fill needs another controlled application rather than sanding a wide area down to meet it.

Record the cause as well as the finish

If a line, fender, fitting, trailer support, dock, or hardware edge caused the scratch, correct that contact before the next trip. Photograph the completed repair and note products, batch, mixing, temperature, cure time, and finishing grades. Recheck after use for cracking, shrinkage, colour change, or moisture.

Stop if sanding reveals fibers, delamination, a void, wet core, widespread crazing, or a crack extending beyond the planned repair. Also stop if the laminate has changed shape, the area remains damp, or the mark sits within a structural repair you cannot document. Grinding deeper in hopes of finding the end can destroy useful evidence and enlarge the professional repair.

Some cosmetic work is still worth sending out. A large dark hull, complex metallic finish, patterned nonskid surface, or highly visible molded corner can require skill and tools beyond a first repair. Ask the repairer how they will identify the damage boundary, control dust, match the finish, and document any laminate work. Photograph the defect before, during, and after repair. Add the materials, batch information, conditions, and cure dates to the boat's record so a future inspection has context.
