How to Check and Adjust Shroud Tension

Quick answer
The short version
Shroud tension holds the mast in a designed relationship with the hull and other rigging. It is not a place for turning bottle screws until the wires feel tight. Seldén's tuning guide makes its own assumptions about rig type and 1x19 stainless wire, gives a measurement method, and says final tuning happens while sailing. Your boat may have different wire, terminals, mast section, spreaders, backstay arrangement, or tuning targets. Begin with the manufacturer's setup information or a rigger's baseline, not a number from another boat.
An owner can make valuable observations: compare sides, look for visible damage, confirm retaining hardware, keep a record, and describe how the rig behaves under sail. Adjustment comes only after you know the applicable method and can restore every safety device correctly.
Start With The Boat's Rig Information
Find the rig maker, mast model if known, wire size and construction, spreader arrangement, chainplate layout, and any tuning sheet left with the boat. A previous owner's handwritten turn count can be useful history, but it is not proof that the current setting is correct. Boats change sails, rigging, mast hardware, and loads over time.
Read the entire applicable guide before touching a turnbuckle. Seldén's guide, for example, separates dockside setup from under-sail final tuning. It also describes a particular stretch measurement method. Copying only the final percentage without the wire type, length, and measurement method would be a misleading shortcut.
Check whether the rig has a known fault, recent dismasting history, new wire, a recent mast removal, damaged spreaders, or a bent fitting. Any of these changes the job. A rig with cracked swages, broken strands, a deformed chainplate, or uncertain terminal retention is not ready for a routine tension exercise. Call a rigger.

Inspect Before You Apply Any Load
Walk each shroud from deck to masthead as far as you can inspect safely. Look for broken or rusty wires, bent terminals, cracked swages, missing or damaged cotter pins, chafe at spreader tips, loose mast fittings, and a chainplate that moves or shows corrosion. Compare port and starboard, while remembering that visual symmetry alone cannot prove tension.
Do not put a hand around a loaded wire rope. A failed strand can cut. Use light, photographs, and a careful viewing position. If the boat is in the water, do not lean outside lifelines or over the side to reach hardware. An accessible inspection can identify a reason to stop. It cannot certify the rig.
Look at the retaining method on each rigging screw. Seldén's cited guide calls for a split pin through each terminal in its configuration and warns against one lashing method for a stated terminal type. That is exactly why each boat's hardware must be identified before a pin is removed. A turnbuckle that can unwind is not an acceptable outcome from an otherwise careful adjustment.
Check the mast and deck before you adjust the wire. A mast that appears off centre, a partner that has moved, a cracked deck fitting, or a chainplate that flexes changes the question from tuning to structure. Photograph the evidence and call a rigger or surveyor. Tensioning against an unrecognised structural problem can hide its movement rather than correct it.
If you find anything unfamiliar, photograph it and leave it in place. A rigger can usually tell more from a clear picture of a terminal, thread exposure, and chainplate than from a description such as "it looked loose."

Measure With The Applicable Method
Tension is load, not sound. Plucking a shroud or judging it by hand does not account for wire size, length, construction, mast geometry, or the way the hull responds. Use the tension gauge or stretch method stated by the rig maker. Record the method and conditions so a later check can be compared fairly.
Seldén's guidance notes that its dockside cap shrouds have equal load and uses a measured stretch relationship for its specified 1x19 wire. It gives a 15–20% breaking-load aim for that application. Treat that as an illustration of how detailed a valid target must be, not as a universal range for every sailboat.
Measure both sides before adjusting either side. Note rig state: boat afloat or ashore, mast stepped, backstay setting, sails removed or set, and whether the boat is level. A number with no conditions may make a later difference look like a fault when it is simply a different setup.
If you do not have the correct data or measuring tool, do not substitute a random spring scale or an internet table. Arrange a rigger's visit. A professional can inspect the whole system while setting a baseline you can later monitor.

Make Matched, Recorded Adjustments
Only adjust after the inspection and measurement show you that the manufacturer method applies. Work in small, documented increments. Seldén's example uses equal changes and rechecks; that is the discipline to copy, not the number of turns. Record the starting position, every turn, and the resulting measurement on both sides.
Do not make a large change to one cap shroud and assume the mast will sort itself out. Shrouds, lower stays, backstay, mast bend, and hull shape interact. A change at one turnbuckle can alter load elsewhere. If the mast begins to look out of column, a shroud slackens unexpectedly, or a fitting binds, stop and get expert help.
Never leave a turnbuckle unretained while you attend to another task. Refit the specified split pin, ring, cover, or other retaining method as the manufacturer requires. Protect sharp pin ends so they cannot cut sails, hands, or nearby lines. Do not invent a lashing pattern because it looks tidy.
Put a second person in the process when possible. One person can count a change and read the tool while the other confirms which turnbuckle moved and records the result. This reduces the ordinary mistakes that happen when you climb between port and starboard and try to remember whether a fitting has already been adjusted.
The why a mainsail is hard to hoist article is a reminder that standing and running rigging affect each other. If tuning coincides with a hard hoist or changed mast-track alignment, record both rather than treating them as unrelated.

Validate The Tune Under Sail
Dockside tension is only part of the picture. Seldén's guide says final tuning happens while sailing and gives an under-sail observation for the leeward cap shroud in its particular setup. The correct heel angle, backstay condition, sail combination, and limits come from the applicable rig instructions, not from an informal look during any gust.
Choose a controlled day and bring someone who can watch the rig without abandoning lookout or boat handling. Check mast straightness, shroud behaviour, and any unusual noise as the guide directs. Do not send a crew member onto deck in conditions that make the observation unsafe. If the rig behaves unexpectedly, shorten sail, return to a safe berth, and call a rigger.
Recheck after new rigging beds in, a mast is stepped, a major load event occurs, or at the start of a season as your rig maker advises. Seldén notes that a fibreglass hull can change shape under load and that new yachts particularly need later checking. Other designs may have their own reasons and schedules.
Keep the final baseline with the boat's documents. Include date, wire data, method, measurements, adjustment notes, conditions under sail, and photos of retained terminals. This record turns a future concern into a comparison rather than another set of guesses.
The rig also changes with use. New wire settles, a mast may be stepped differently after yard work, and the boat may carry different sail plans or backstay loads. A baseline does not freeze the rig forever. It gives the next check something real to compare with while the maker's method remains in charge.
