Point the boat into the wind under power, with just enough speed for steady steering. Ease the mainsheet until the sail flaps without pressure. As an alternative, centre the boom and steer about 10° off the wind. This keeps the crew on the high side while the sail falls to the low side.

Before releasing the halyard, identify what will hold up the boom. Check the topping lift or rigid boom vang if fitted. Some boats use lazy jacks to guide the sail, but these light lines are not designed to carry the full weight of the boom or sail and do not replace a topping lift. Hardware varies, so check the boat-specific system first.

Ease the halyard. Do not release it all at once. Watch the mainsail as it descends. Remove a turn from the winch only as the sail gets lower and the load becomes lighter. Keep the loose halyard aboard because a line in the water can foul the propeller. Never wrap it around your hand or body.

If the sail stops, stop easing. Look for a stuck slide, a batten caught on a control line, or a halyard kink. Clear the obstruction instead of pulling harder.

Build Each Flake as the Sail Comes Down

Stand forward of the mast and face aft. Keep one hand ready on each side of the sail. The luff is the front edge beside the mast.

As the halyard handler eases, pull the first broad fold between the bottom corner and the first slide. Lay it across the boom with a generous overlap—about 30 cm (1 ft) on each side. Secure that fold with a sail tie straight away. This keeps the sail from sliding off while you continue.

Now work upward. Between each pair of slides, pull one fold to port, then the next to starboard. Ask the halyard handler to pause or ease more slowly so you can shape each fold. If a slide is reluctant, pull down on the luff first from one side, then the other. Do not haul continuously from only one side.

Let the leech, the sail’s back edge, settle consistently on one side of the boom. Keep alternating until you reach the top. If anything catches, call for a pause before pulling harder.

Stop Before a Snag Becomes a Tangle

While lowering and flaking the mainsail, treat any sudden resistance as a stop signal. Stop easing the halyard. Tell the crew what has caught. Then remove the load from the snag and clear its cause before you continue.

A batten may catch on a lazy jack—the light line that guides the sail toward the boom. Raise the sail a little, by hand or with a few centimetres of halyard, until the batten clears. If needed, adjust the boat’s angle to the wind so the sail moves away from the line. Do not pull harder.

Lazy jacks guide the sail, but they are not generally designed to carry the full weight of the boom and sail. Avoid loading them while you free the batten. Know how your boat supports its boom.

If a sail slide stops running down, pull the front edge of the sail down alternately on each side of the stuck slide. A sail that will not move freely is a safety issue, not just an annoyance.

Stack packs, halyard routes, and top sail cars vary by boat. Know your system, and stop rather than force unfamiliar hardware.

Secure the Sail and Protect It from Sun and Moisture

If you remove the sail from the boom, especially for longer storage, keep it below deck when possible and avoid making the same sharp creases each time.
