That outline is not universal. Dinghies differ in buoyancy, centerboard strength, mast flotation, and re-entry method. Learn the procedure for your class and practise it with an instructor or safety boat in controlled conditions.

A capsize drill is easier when you remember that speed is not the first goal. The first goal is a complete crew and a stable situation. The boat can wait while you check that nobody is trapped, injured, or separated.

This guide describes the common centerboard sequence so you know what an instructor is asking you to do. It cannot replace class-specific practice. If the water is cold, the weather is deteriorating, someone is hurt, or the boat has drifted into another hazard, recovery priorities change. Signal for help and use the support available rather than forcing a drill that is no longer safe.

Account for the crew and stay with the boat

Call to the other sailor and make visual contact. If you are under a sail, line, or hull, move out by the clearest route without wrapping a line around yourself. Once clear, keep a hand on a secure part of the boat if conditions allow.

The hull gives flotation and makes the group more visible. Swimming away can separate you from that support and from the other crew member. Gather at a place where you can talk without being struck by the boom or trapped under rigging.

Check the boat's position too. A capsize near a channel, lee shore, breaking waves, or cold-water exposure is no longer a simple training exercise. Use the agreed signal and accept assistance early. Recovery remains secondary to people.

Keep communicating even when both sailors look unhurt. One person may be cold, winded, or disoriented and unable to take their usual role. Agree who will move first and who will keep the boat from drifting away.

A dinghy capsize is not the same event as a keelboat knockdown, and it helps to know the difference before you are in the water. A ballasted keelboat has enough weight low in its keel that it usually rights itself once a gust passes; a centerboard dinghy has no such ballast, so once it goes past around 90 degrees of heel it depends on the crew for recovery rather than its own stability. If the mast and sails end up pointing straight down with the hull fully upside down, sailors call this "turtled." A turtled boat almost always needs more than one person and a different first step than a simple side-lying capsize, because the centerboard is no longer usable as a lever until the hull is brought back onto its side. Recognizing which situation you are in, before you start pulling, saves energy and avoids fighting the wrong problem.

If a capsize happens away from immediate help, agree on one crew member acting as the signaler: staying visible on or near the hull, waving an arm or paddle at regular intervals, and calling out to any boat or shore-based lookout that might be watching. A stationary, waving hull is far easier for a safety boat to notice than two heads bobbing at the surface, and having one clear job removes the guesswork about who is doing what while the other sailor works the recovery.

Set the sails and hull up for recovery

Look at the boat before pulling. A boat lying on its side presents the centerboard as a lever. A fully inverted boat needs its class-specific method to bring the hull back onto its side first. Do not climb onto fragile fittings or the far tip of the board.

Release the mainsheet, jib sheet, and vang if they are loaded and accessible. The purpose is simple: as the mast rises, loose sails are less likely to fill suddenly and roll the boat back over. Check that sheets are not looped around a person.

If the bow has blown directly downwind, the sails may catch as they leave the water. Your instructor may teach a particular bow position or crew placement for that class. Follow it. The best setup reduces the work required after the boat starts moving.

Take a moment to untangle only what blocks the recovery. Trying to make every line perfect while both people remain in the water wastes warmth and attention. Secure the essentials once the hull is upright.

A common mistake is releasing the mainsheet but leaving the vang cleated. With the vang still tight, the boom stays pinned down and the leech can hold enough shape to refill and roll the boat straight back over as soon as it starts to rise. Work through the controls in order rather than assuming one release is enough, and glance at the boom before you commit your weight to the board.

Use steady leverage on the centerboard

Reach the centerboard near its root, where it enters the hull. Place your feet or body as taught and lean back using a secure line only if the class method calls for it. Apply weight smoothly. Jerking wastes energy and may make your grip less secure.

At first the boat may move slowly. As the mast lifts and water drains from the sail, righting becomes easier. Watch the rig and keep clear of the boom's path. The other sailor may hold the bow, help with leverage, or prepare for a scoop re-entry depending on the boat.

As the hull passes upright, reduce your pull and be ready for it to roll the other way. A newly righted dinghy with loose crew and filled sails can capsize again. Controlled movement matters more than a dramatic final heave.

If the boat does not move under steady load, stop and reassess. The mast may be stuck, a sail may be holding water, or the hull may be fully inverted. More force is not automatically the answer.

Bracing matters as much as position. Rather than gripping the board's edge with bare hands, many classes teach holding the tail of the mainsheet or a halyard for leverage while your feet or body rest against the board itself. That keeps your grip secure and your weight controllable as the hull starts to move, instead of relying on friction alone.

If you find the hull is fully turtled rather than lying on its side, stop pulling on the centerboard and switch to the class-specific method for bringing it onto its side first. Pulling harder on an inverted hull's board usually just tires you out; the geometry has to change before leverage works the way it does on a side-lying capsize.

Re-enter, stabilize, and reset

Use the re-entry point taught for the dinghy. One crew member may already be aboard through a scoop method; on another class, both enter over a low side or stern. Avoid hauling on unsupported rigging. Help the less mobile or colder person first when the situation allows.

Once aboard, keep weight low and central. Confirm both people are unhurt, clear lines from the water, and make sure the rudder and centerboard are usable. Bail or let the self-bailing system work as designed. Only sheet in when the boat is pointed safely and the crew is ready.

Pause before continuing. A capsize may reveal strong wind, fatigue, or a gear problem. Shorten sail, return to shore, or request support if that is the sensible choice. Finishing the session is never owed.

Cold hands make clips, knots, and fine controls harder to manage. Give the crew time to settle, add clothing if available, and let the safety boat help rather than rushing back into a second capsize.

Resist the urge to swim for shore even when it looks close, unless staying with the boat has genuinely become the more dangerous choice. A floating hull is far more visible to a lookout than a swimmer's head, and distances over open water are consistently harder to judge, and to cover, than they appear from the water. If a crew member does become separated from the boat, treat it with the same seriousness as a man overboard: keep pointing at them, keep them talking, and get them back aboard the hull rather than leaving them to swim independently.

Before you next launch, walk through the same priorities with your crew as part of a normal safety briefing: who signals, who stays with the boat, and when the plan changes from a training capsize to a call for help.
