How to Repair a Leaking Portlight

Quick answer
The short version
A leaking portlight may be failing at the opening gasket, the lens-to-frame seal, or the bedding between the outer frame and the cabin side. Water can also travel from a deck fitting above and appear beside the portlight. Dry the area, remove loose trim, and test one boundary at a time with a gentle stream while someone watches inside. Repair only the path that leaks. A tired gasket may be replaceable without removing the frame; failed frame bedding requires removing and rebedding the assembly according to its maker's instructions. Cracked lenses, distorted frames, wet core, and uncertain structural damage call for a model-specific repair plan.
The drip on the berth tells you where water arrived, not necessarily where it entered. Headliner, trim, and the cabin-side laminate can carry it sideways before gravity wins. That is why smearing sealant around the visible wet corner so often disappoints. First identify the portlight model and construction. Find its fitting drawing, seal profile, fastener arrangement, and approved materials. If the leak sits near a hatch or deck fitting, trace the rainwater path before dismantling anything. Protect upholstery and electrical equipment, then begin with a completely dry interior.
Map the first wet point before repair
Remove only the interior trim needed to see the frame edge and the surrounding cabin side. Blot old moisture until the surface is dry. Tuck narrow strips of dry absorbent paper at the lower frame, corners, fasteners, and any joint between the lens and frame. These witnesses reveal the first damp place more clearly than a towel spread beneath the whole opening. Mark each strip so the observer can call its location without guessing.
Inspect before adding water. A dirt trail across the gasket can show where water passed the compression seal. A gap in perimeter bedding, corrosion bloom at a fastener, or staining that begins above the port may point elsewhere. Look outside too. The frame should sit evenly against the cabin side, without a lifted corner or an old stack of surface caulk. Pressing lightly may reveal movement, but do not pry or tighten fasteners as a diagnostic test.
Write down the starting condition. Photograph the outside perimeter and the exposed inside edge. Note whether the port was open or dogged shut when the leak appeared, whether rain was driven from one direction, and whether the boat was heeled. Those details help distinguish a closing-seal problem from water entering behind a fixed frame.

Is the leak at the gasket or behind the frame?
An opening portlight normally has at least two separate water barriers. The flexible gasket seals the moving lens against the frame. Bedding seals the fixed outer frame to the cabin side. Some models also have a separate lens-to-frame bond. Water crossing one barrier can emerge beside another, so the inside drip alone cannot identify the failed joint.
Start the controlled test at the lowest suspected boundary. Let a gentle stream run over a short section of the closed gasket while the observer watches the paper inside. Move around the gasket in small stages. If it remains dry, repeat along the lens edge where that joint is separate. Test the outer-frame perimeter last, again from low to high. This order avoids washing water over every possible entry point before the first observation.
If the gasket leaks, inspect it for a flattened profile, cracks, shrinkage, dirt, or a section that has pulled from its channel. Check whether the catches apply even pressure; a distorted frame or badly adjusted latch can leave one corner uncompressed. If water first appears behind the fixed frame, plan for rebedding rather than pushing more sealant onto the exposed edge. A leak that begins before the stream reaches the portlight supports the possibility of a travelling leak from above.

Run a hose test that isolates one boundary
Use low flow and patience. A hard jet can force water past a sound seal, splash behind trim, and make several paper witnesses wet at once. One person controls the hose outside while the observer inside calls the first change. Agree on simple names for the four sides and stop immediately after a damp mark appears. Dry everything before testing the next suspect.
Begin below the portlight. Water running upward into the cabin while the stream is still low suggests a path from the bottom frame or a nearby lower fastener. Continue along one vertical side, across the top, and down the other side only while the inside remains dry. Then test nearby deck hardware separately. This takes longer than flooding the whole cabin side, but it produces a repairable finding.
Do not use cabin pressure unless the boat builder or an experienced repairer has specified the method and pressure. The practical hose test needs no improvised pressure rig. Keep water away from open electrical panels and unfinished laminate. If you cannot expose the inside frame safely, or if water disappears into cored structure, pause and ask a surveyor or repair yard to define the inspection.
This method also works when you are diagnosing a deck hatch leak, but keep the tests separate. Water from a hatch or stanchion can travel far enough to frame the innocent portlight.

Match the repair to the confirmed path
For a dirty compression gasket, clean it with products approved by the portlight maker and retest. Replace a cracked, hardened, shrunken, or permanently flattened seal with the exact profile for that model. Lewmar's instructions for its Standard portlights, for example, specify checking the replacement size, removing the old seal, cleaning its aluminium cavity with a plastic scraper, dry-fitting in a stated order, and applying the prescribed sealant in the channel. That sequence belongs to those products; use the instructions for the unit on your boat.
Failed frame bedding is a larger job. Support the assembly, remove trim and fasteners in the maker's sequence, and cut the old bedding without damaging the frame or cabin surface. Clean both mating faces. Inspect the aperture for cracked laminate, corrosion, wet core, damaged fastener holes, or distortion. Structural damage and wet core need repair before the frame goes back. Dry-fit the inner and outer parts so you know they clamp evenly before opening sealant.
Use compatible marine bedding of the type and thickness specified by the manufacturer. Do not assume the strongest adhesive is best; future service and compatibility with acrylic, aluminium, paint, and laminate matter. Tighten in the documented pattern and torque where the maker gives one. Uneven or excessive tightening can distort a frame or damage the lens. Remove surplus bedding as directed rather than tooling a decorative outer fillet over an uncertain joint.

How do you know the portlight is sealed?
Allow the bedding or gasket sealant to cure for the full maker-specified time. Refit catches and trim only as the instructions allow during curing. Then repeat the same low-to-high hose sequence that found the leak. Matching the test matters: a random spray after repair cannot prove that the previously wet boundary stayed dry. Watch the paper witnesses for several minutes after the outside water stops because a slow path may take time to appear.
Open and close the portlight after the cure. The lens should move freely, catches should engage without forcing, and gasket compression should look even. Inspect the outer frame for a continuous bed and the inside clamp ring for distortion. If a new gasket makes closure unusually tight, consult its instructions rather than grinding, stretching, or overloading the catches.
Record the model, part number, materials, cure time, test sequence, and result. Keep photographs of the exposed aperture if the frame was removed. At the next rain, inspect the same paper-witness locations before assuming the job is finished. A recurring stain may identify a second path that the first leak had hidden.
Also check the berth, locker, and headliner after the boat has moved. Residual water can drain from trim after the repaired joint is already dry. Distinguishing that stored water from a fresh leak prevents an unnecessary second teardown.
