Look along hoses, clamps, tanks, pumps, and plumbing joints for moisture. Clean accessible strainers and drains as their manuals allow. Exercise pumps, valves, anchor gear, and other equipment that has been idle, then record whether it operated normally.

Inspect sails at seams, corners, slides, and reef points. Follow standing and running rigging from deck level, looking for broken strands, cracked fittings, missing retainers, chafe, or movement. Clean enough of the boat to expose evidence rather than cover it. Monthly does not mean every thirty days in all climates. Adjust the cadence to use, weather, storage, and manufacturer schedules. What Makes Seasonal Work Different?

Seasonal work reaches places and systems that routine checks cannot. A haulout can expose the underwater hull, keel, rudder, propeller, anodes, and through-hull fittings. The work may include cleaning, coating, engine and fuel-system service, battery testing, plumbing care, sail inspection, and a fuller rig review. Cold-weather storage adds draining or protecting any system that holds water. Warm climates still need an off-season plan for heat, storms, humidity, or long periods without use.

Build the list from each equipment manual before booking the yard. Separate tasks into owner work, yard work, and specialist work. Note dependencies: a surveyor or rigger may need the mast stepped or the boat ashore; paint needs preparation and a launch window. That planning prevents a boat from being blocked on stands while one missing part or appointment delays everything else.

How Should You Keep a Maintenance Log?

Record the date, engine or sailing hours when relevant, observation, action, product or part used, and the next due point. Photographs help you compare a fitting, leak stain, hose, or coating over time. Keep receipts and reports with the entry so a later owner or technician can understand the history. Keep defects separate from completed maintenance. Give each unresolved item an owner, next action, and limit on use if needed. Review the open list before planning a trip. Build the checklist around the actual boat

Collect manuals for the hull, engine, rig, steering, electrical system, batteries, pumps, head, heating, and installed equipment. Copy each maker's inspection and service item into one calendar. Add yard, insurer, class, and current local requirements where they apply. A generic list can remind you where to look, but it cannot set every interval or product.

Turn observations into work orders
