Identify the Symptom

Note whether the problem occurs on fill, dry pumping, or discharge. Stop repeated operation because it can overflow the bowl, damage a pump, or push a blockage farther into the system.
Check tank level using more than an unreliable gauge when the manual provides a safe method. A blocked holding-tank vent can make pumping difficult and create odour or pressure. Inspect the vent outlet and line without introducing tools that could damage them. If sewage is leaking or the route is uncertain, contain the area and call a marine sanitation technician.
Odour alone does not locate a fault. Clean and ventilate, then inspect one likely source at a time. A dry bowl, hose exterior, tank vent, bilge, and nearby drain can smell similar in a small cabin. Record whether odour appears after pumping or only under way.

Check Water and Pumping
For a no-fill symptom, confirm the inlet seacock position, strainer condition if fitted, hose routing, and wet/dry control. Air entering a suction connection can prevent priming. Follow the toilet maker's priming and seal-lubrication instructions. Household oils and aggressive cleaners may damage rubber parts, so use only approved products.
For an electric unit, confirm adequate voltage at the equipment under load, correct fuse or breaker state, and sound connections. Low voltage can mimic a mechanical problem. Isolate power before working on the motor or wiring. For a manual pump, resistance or a handle that springs back can indicate restriction or valve trouble. Do not use extra force.
Listen for a motor that slows, clicks, or runs without moving waste, and stop before it overheats. Confirm fuse rating from the manual rather than fitting a larger one. A repeated trip is evidence of a fault, not an inconvenience to defeat with more current.

Clear Restrictions Safely
Close and tag the relevant seacocks, isolate power, empty or control the bowl, and prepare containers and absorbent material before disconnecting anything. Verify that a hose is not below the waterline in a way that could siphon. The toilet and valve manuals specify the disassembly order and replacement seals. Sanitation hoses can retain waste even after the bowl looks empty.
Common service points include the pump valves, joker valve, discharge elbow, vented loop, tank inlet, and vent. Replace swollen, hardened, torn, or incorrectly seated parts with specified components. If unsuitable material entered the system, remove it from the nearest safe access point rather than pushing it toward the tank. Restore clamps and seacock positions exactly, then test with clean water.

Prevent Odours and Blockages

Write down what the toilet does before taking anything apart. Does flush water enter? Does the bowl empty? Does waste return? Is the handle unusually hard or loose? Does the fault occur only with the holding tank selected, only after sailing, or only when the tank is nearly full? Is the smell at the bowl, hose, tank vent, or throughout the compartment?
Trace the installed route with the manual. Identify inlet seacock, pump, wet or dry selector, bowl outlet, joker valve, discharge hose, vented loops where fitted, holding tank, tank vent, deck pump-out, selector valves, and any permitted discharge path. Valve positions must match the intended route and current local rules.
Separate inlet from discharge. No flush water suggests checking the inlet seacock, hose, pump prime, wet/dry mechanism, and related valves. Water that enters but will not leave moves attention to the outlet, joker valve, hose, selector valve, tank level, and vent. A pump that becomes hard is a reason to stop, not use extra force.
Protect the boat and the person doing the work
Close or isolate seacocks as the boat's procedure requires before opening plumbing. Wear gloves and eye protection, ventilate the space, keep absorbent and disinfecting materials ready, and control contaminated waste. Never loosen a hose or cap when trapped pressure or a full tank may release sewage.
Use only the toilet maker's service procedure, lubricant, and parts. Household drain chemicals can damage seals, hoses, tanks, or treatment systems and may create a hazardous mixture. A plunger or improvised pressure can push a restriction into a less accessible hose or rupture a fitting.

Prevent the repeat fault
